The Secret Turkey Reuben

"Well, we don't really have a Reuben on the menu" he said. No problem. I used on of my favorite ways to order "What sandwich are you most proud of?" After hemming and hawing a bit, the guy behind the counter let on that he had built himself a "turkey reuben" earlier in the week and it was "pretty darn good" but would take a few minutes. All signs were pointing to this being a darn good lunch. I was presented with a huge Reuben with an extra layer of smoked turkey in it and I knew I had found yet another secret delicacy not featured on any menu in town.

March in Kansas City - 2013 edition

It's March in Kansas City. Here's what we have to look forward to:

Winter Driving Tips for Kansas City

As you've probably heard, we're expecting a MAJOR WINTER STORM starting tomorrow evening in Kansas City. At this point, all signs appear to point to accumulation of between .5" and 1" of snow. Now, having a little less than an inch of snow in Kansas City can be pretty alarming for some Kansas Citians. So, while you're stocking up on craft beer and overpriced gasoline, here are some winter driving tips.

Goodbye Poco Shrimp

You've probably heard the news by now, if you haven't seen the smoke, but it appears that JJ's Restaurant on the Plaza was destroyed by an explosion and fire this evening. Early reports are that there was a gas leak leading up to the explosion and that several people have been taken to the hospital. I'm hoping for the best for all of the staff, patrons, construction workers, and others involved.

Tip for Bar Owners: Hooks Under Your Bar

I was in a bar recently while carrying a small bag. I reached under the bar to find a hook. Based on the look of the place, I knew my odds weren't great, but I was hopeful. No luck. I couldn't find a hook and had to set my bag down on the moist floor. It was wet outside, and I knew I'd have a bit of a mess on my hands after a while, so I was disappointed.

I knew that I had ranted about this problem before, but couldn't exactly recall where. While leafing back through some old posts on the old KC Guy site, I ran across my post:

M & S Grill

M & S is one of my favoriate Plaza restaurants, but also one I almost always forget. Perhaps that's because it's way over on the East side of the Plaza, facing the park.

Oklahoma Joe's

One of Kansas City's favorite BBQ joints.

Everyone knows about the Z-Man, but did you know about these secret tips?

  • Call ahead for carryout and avoid the mile-long line
  • If you're waiting in line, send someone over to the carry-out counter to grab a few beers. It helps make the wait a little more tolerable
  • I heard there's a pork Z-Man, but I've never tried it. Let me know if they'll make you one.

Back in Action

I thought I might start putting up some more stuff that's useful for guys in Kansas City.

I was told recently that I'm one of the most well-fed people around. You don't get to that kind of a position without knowing a thing or two about food and drink in Kansas City. Keep an eye on the site for things that a KC guy ought to know.
