Today is the Kentucky Derby. There are a few places around town having specials:

Or, if you're not interested in going out and just want to stay home and have a mint julep, here's my secret recipe for the perfect mint julep:

In an old fashioned glass, or even a julep cup, combine a small handful of mint leaves and some superfine sugar. Note that the mint isn't really up in Kansas City yet, so you have to pay about $5 for a baby-sized handful at the supermarket. That stuff comes from Mexico and probably has swine flu on it. Muddle the sugar and mint leaves for a while until you get tired of messing with it. Then, dump it all out and wash your glass. Then add 5 large ice cubes. Fill the glass about 3/4 of the way full with Kentucky bourbon. Then add a splash of branch water if you'd like. This is available from your tap in the KC metro area. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your mint julep, free of all the mint and sugary distractions.
