Tonight is the last night of the Garth Brooks concerts downtown. I've checked out downtown during a couple of the concerts, and it's certainly much more busy than it usually is, especially after 5pm, but it doesn't seem to be too over-crowded. The cars line up on 12th street from 35 all the way to Grand to get to someplace to park, and I'm sure they're lined up in every other direction, too. But, they're all pretty much gone by the time the show starts, which means that people are finding places to park and getting in in time.

I checked out a couple of downtown spots that are benefiting from the extra foot traffic. 12 Baltimore was really hoping one night before the show. I'm not sure their staff expected quite the wave of people, but seemed to be coping with it OK. That's one of my favorite swanky downtown bars for a cocktail and bar food that's better than average. If their staff can keep up, it seems like a pretty good place to drop by before a show at the Sprint Center, but it's a little bit of a walk. I suspect foot traffic from the Sprint Center will drastically fall off once the Power and Light District starts opening up.

I also popped into the Aladdin Hotel to check out their lobby and bar, which I had never seen. This isn't the Aladdin from Vegas. It's a Holiday Inn stuck in an historic building next to the Muelbach on Wyandotte between 12th and 13th, across from the Barney Allis Plaza. The lobby is like a set from the Jetson's comic come to life. It reminds me of how we pictured the future back in the 60's, which I have to say I like. Their little bar upstairs from the lobby isn't much, but since no-one else seems to know about it, would be a great place to have a cocktail before a show at the Folly Theater or the Music Hall.

Downtown is becoming a more and more fun place to be, now that we don't roll up the sidewalks and abandon it after 5pm on weekdays.

  • I see that Cordish has surprisingly decided to charge for parking at the Power and Light District. That's too bad.
  • I'm interested to see how the efforts to place the new GSA building work out. There are about 3 potential spots near downtown that may work out, and the additions seem like they would be great for just about any of them. But, if they put it near the Richard L. Berkley Park would that cut down on the amount of anonymous gay sex that goes on there?
