I made it over to d'Bronx in Overland Park for their opening on Wednesday and I'm glad I did.

First, I was shocked to see that there were a ton of people there. I didn't expect that since there was no "Grand Opening" banner or even an "open" sign out front. Also, it was just about 11:15, which is usually early enough to beat the lunch rush in most places. I ended up having to stand in line for a few minutes before I could get up to the counter to order, but that's OK; I knew it was going to be worth it.

Once up at the counter, I was really happy with what I saw. The open layout of the restaurant meant that I could check out the kitchen and the cooking process. That often makes me feel much better about what I'm eating, unless it's one of those really dingy places where I wish that I couldn't see the kitchen at all. Plus, their display case was stuffed with fresh, hot pizzas, plenty of interesting sides like olive salad, and an impressive collection of baked desserts. That glass display case can do more for selling food than any amount of advertising, I think.

I went for the traditional slice of cheese pizza, partially because I'm a traditionalist, and partially because I thought it might be quicker. It wasn't quicker from what I could tell. The opening day frenzy was certainly putting the d'Bronx crew to the test. The slice was all that I was hoping for. It even had that slightly dark taste to the crust that I thought came from years of using the same oven. I followed it up with a warm chocolate-chip cookie and was glad to have a little bit of New York in Overland Park. Check out the d'Bronx page for locations, hours, and the d'Bronx menu.
