The Kansas City St. Patrick's Day parade is March 17, 2009. In 2009, the parade has been moved to Westport.

Here's a map of the parade route:

  • Here's a google map showing parking for the parade. There's apparently a shuttle from Crown Center and Union Station to points near the parade route.
  • More parade information is available at the official parade website

Points of Interest on the Parade Route

Moving from North to South along the parade route, here are some of the places that the parade will pass:

  • The business that stands to gain the most from this year's move to Westport is Browne's Irish Market & Deli. It's located on 33rd and Pennsylvania, just East of the start of the parade route. Irish KC has more information about Browne's celebration this year.
  • The Kansas City Life Insurance Company building has a huge lawn that might make for a good place to watch the parade, if they let you
  • Cafe Trio
  • Outabounds
  • La Parrilla Mexican
  • hangout
  • New Cafe Tandoor
  • The parking lot of the abandoned mall on the East side of the street here might be a good place to watch from.
  • The Uptown Theater
  • The News Room will probably celebrate pretty hard. This bar has been there forever
  • Chubby's might be a good place to try to get breakfast or lunch, if you can get a table
  • Fitz's Blarney Stone - I've never been in here, so I'll have to look into this a bit more.
  • The Lava Room. I'm hopeful that it's still in business in March. There's a "for sale" sign on the building
  • Will the new building on the SouthEast corner of 39th and Broadway be done in time? I think it's supposed to be a Jimmy John's
  • The Riot Room
  • The Corner might be a good place to get breakfast on parade day.
  • Broadway Cafe
  • GoJo Japanese Steak House. I wonder if they'll open in time on parade day.
  • The Vietnam Veterans' memorial will probably provide a good place from which to watch
  • On the other side of Broadway is a rise that used to be a rail bridge across Broadway. It will probably offer the best view of the parade.
  • If you're really into parades, I guess you can get a room at Embassy Suites and overlook the route
  • I think the parade stops before it goes in front of Mill Creek Park.

Popular St. Patrick's Day bars

  • the Gaf in Waldo is usually pretty fun. It's actually somewhat Irish year round.
  • Also in Waldo is Walsh's corner cocktail. I'm not sure why, but this place gets absolutely packed for St. Patty's Day.
  • O'Dowd's is an old standby
  • Kelly's in Westport is an even older standby. One fateful St. Patrick's Day, Brandon got punched in the face at Kelly's and thrown out. Since he had bled all over his white t-shirt, he turned it inside-out in order to try to get back in. His ruse did not fool the bouncer.
  • Harling's is always pretty busy on St. Patty's Day. It will probably be even more popular in 2009 when the parade moves to Westport.
  • Lew's in Waldo is having an Irish Hooley all day, starting with breakfast
  • The Record Bar in Westport is hosting quite a bit of live music
  • Governor Stumpy's is hosting breakfast and serving green beer.
