The Foundry at McCoy's

I was down at the Foundry shortly after it opened in July 2008. That's the new joint in Westport that's attached to McCoy's. They have a ton of beers available, including a pretty extensive Belgian section. Many are on tap, but they have a pretty good collection of bottles, too.

It's a swanky little joint, with a roomy bar and high-top tables by the garage doors that probably open when it's not 128 degrees outside. Plus, like almost every place in KC now, they have a patio so that you can smoke and sweat. Also, like most around here, it has a fantastic view of the parking lot.

At first glance, the menu was pretty standard for a bar, but each item had something unique about it. It's like the last ingredient in each thing on the menu was a completely unexpected twist designed to make you read the description again. I eventually gave up and got a Philly Cheesesteak. It was pretty good.

What impressed me most was our waitress's knowledge of the beers on the menu. The place probably has 100 beers, and they've only been open a month. Yet, this young girl was able to suggest a handful of delicious, somewhat obscure beers that matched my taste. They have either done really well at training or hiring.

I'll be back down to the foundry soon, I'm sure.
