Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Police Station
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the new KCMO police station near 75th and Prospect was yesterday afternoon. The building is very impressive, especially when compared to the facilities that Metro Patrol was formerly using on 63rd street. Operations were scheduled to move to the new building this morning.
Contrary to some reports, Mayor Funkhouser neither parchuted in, nor took all of the credit for the project. As was appropriate for a Mayor, he spoke after Chief Corwin did, pointed out many people who contributed to the project, and introduced the first in a long line of state representatives who spoke after him.
The police department took the opportunity to show off tons of their tools and toys. In addition to the handful of special operations vehicles parked near their new outbuildings, there was a line of motorcycles, a pair of ATVs, two officers on horseback, and the helicopter affectionately known as “690.” I find the ATVs and horse especially interesting when I see them cruising around Waldo. There’s nothing like seeing a pair of cops on 4-wheelers at Quick Trip on Wornall or a pair of horses walk past the Well.
I’m glad to know that the Metro Patrol has better digs now, and I look forward to seeing what replaces the old building when it is demolished. The neighborhood left behind could use a little spark to keep it alive.
So, the US team seems to have avoided a loss so far in the world cup this year. They have two more matches to play before possibly being eliminated before the knockout stage starts. The first is this Friday, June 18, and the other is next Wednesday, June 23. They’re both rather early in the morning for US watchers, but many games fall later in the day. Where are the good places to watch the World Cup in Kansas City?
Reports about the crowds at the “living room” in the Power and Light District have been surprisingly good. I have heard estimates of the number of people there watching the first US game to be between 1500 and 2000 folks. Those numbers surprise me so much that I have to expect that they’re slightly exaggerated, but at least give hope that it’s a great place to have some fun while watching the games.
One place I would not go is Coach’s on 103rd Street, unless you check with them first. They were featured on the news a few times this morning as having suffered pretty bad flooding last night. I’m betting that they’ll be closed for a week, so they might not be open in time for either of these games.
Where have you found to be a good place to take in a World Cup match?
