Is this a blog?

Note: This article originally ran as a daily post on July 18, 2008. I moved it here for easy reference, as I often do with daily posts that I will continue to refer to over time.

I was recently asked if thekcguy.com was a blog. The truth is, I don't really know. But, it got me thinking that perhaps I should explain a bit more about what this site is and how you can find useful information on it. I hope you'll pardon the brief introspection.

Reasons that it may be a blog:

  • Daily (or at least regular) updates, with dated posts, like this one
  • RSS feed that you can subscribe to, either by RSS or email (use the links on the left!)

Reasons that it may not be a blog:

  • I typically only have one daily post on the front page at a time. It's the one on the left of the front page, in the pink, under the date.
  • There are lots of articles besides my daily posts that don't ever show up on the left side of the front page. For instance, the . I go back and update these pages regularly, which bloggers don't typically do
  • I doesn't look much like one, in fact it's run on Mediawiki, the same thing that runs Wikipedia.

So, the truth is that I don't really know if it's a blog or not. I typically call it a website. But, since it's a bit unusual, here are some tips on finding your way around my growing pet:

  • Use the search box on the left. It's pretty good at finding articles that mention something you're looking for.
  • Subscribe vie RSS or email and you'll get the daily posts. I typically mention my new larger articles in a daily post or two, so you'll know when there's something new.
  • to let me know about news or events that you'd like listed on the site. I get some of my best article and post ideas from readers, and I'll give you recognition for good ideas.
  • keep an eye on the right side of the front page for the most popular recent articles. That's where I highlight some of the newer articles in which people seem to be most interested.
  • Use the calendar on the front page to check out recent daily posts. You can also peek ahead to see what's coming up. Sometimes I write my daily posts a few days in advance, and you can see them before they're on the main page. I also collect my Today in Kansas City links for the bottom of each daily post in advance. That means you can see what's coming up.

Update: wow. I wrote this whole thing without having read DLC's comment over at Tony's KC. How fortuitous.
