Outdoor Dining Guide
From TheKCGuy
Summer is here, and we can't smoke inside anymore, so the local patios and decks are fuller than ever. Many local establishments are spreading some plastic chairs across a couple of parking spots out back by the dumpster and calling it a patio. Here's your growing source of places to dine outdoors, smoke outdoors, or just gaze across the blacktop at the dumpster.

Downtown
- John's Big Deck features a huge rooftop deck in Downtown. It's a popular happy hour place, especially on Fridays.
Power and Light District
- Gordon Biersch is surprisingly one of the few places that you can sit outside and see the KC Live area. They call their patio the "beer garden". Why not?
Midtown
- Charlie Hooper's has a deck, but you can't really tell it when you're on it.
- Joe D's can put together a great cheese plate with your wine on their Brookside patio
- Jazz on 39th street has a deck that's a great place to eat your crawdads.
- Twin City Tavern has reportedly been moving people outside. This may be their last gasp of smokey breath before they hit the Smoking Ban Death Watch list.
Martini Corner
- Velvet Dog has a great bar on their patio. It includes outdoor pool tables, and bocce ball courts. Are they still there?
- Sol Cantina has one of the "hottest" patios around. The Coronas, martinis, and the skin in this place will make you think you're on spring break in Cancun.
Westport
- Harry's serves some great appetizers and cocktails on their patio.
- McCoy's Public House serves a great dinner on their patio. My favorite is the Chicken Tortilla Salad. They brew their own beer here, too.
- Harpo's features one of the largest patios around, but I always forget about it since it's tucked away in the back of the bar. I almost forget that I'm in Westport when I'm here. Here's a hint: if you want a glass instead of a plastic cup, order a Guiness. They always serve those in pint glasses here.
- Cancun Fiesta Fresh offers the best view of the line to the Beaumont Club in town. I love watching the collection of people waiting to get in there and party like crazy.
- Does the beach volleyball place in Westport count?
- Record Bar apparently has a few tables out front during lunch time. I hope you like views of parking lots and busy streets.
- I think that the Levee has a deck in the back
- Californios has that deck in the back
Plaza
- O'Dowds features the liveliest rooftop patio that I know of. It's a great place for happy hour.
- Brio has some tables on their balcony. I don't know if this qualifies as outdoor dining or not, but I think it's as close as you can get with a roof over your head.
- The Cheesecake Factory has some tables outside. Their huge portions are probably the draw, though.
- Fred P. Otts has a little patio tucked next to it.
- I think that 810 Zone has a few tables up there on their balcony. I haven't been up there to check them out, though.
- Tomfoolerie's has a few tables on the West side. I think that's Jefferson.
- The Classic Cup arguably has the best place to sit outside on the Plaza and watch people.
- Re:Verse has about four tables out front.
- From the patio at Baja 600, you almost forget you're on the Plaza.
- Figlio's has a few tables outside.
- P.F. Chang's does, too.
- McCormick & Schmick's has a huge patio that overlooks the Plaza. It's a great Happy Hour spot, too.
- Uno's has a handful of tables stuffed down in there.
Waldo
- The Gaf may be the only place in Waldo besides Chipotle that offers outdoor dining. Their three tables int he parking lot hardly count, though.
- Governor Stumpy's on Gregory has a little deck on the side, but without much view.
The rest of KCMO
- BB's Lawnside BBQ has a pretty good sized deck out front, though I haven't been by recently to see how it's changed with the construction.
Johnson County
Prairie Village
- Salty Iguana
- Blue Moose features another view of the parking lot, and one on the side.
Leawood
- Paddy O'Quigley's at 119th and Nall has some tables in the parking lot.
Overland Park
- Maloney's
- Johnny's in Corinth has a little patio that will almost make you forget where you are.
- Fred P. Otts on College Blvd has a patio that's a great place for Friday happy hour
