RJ's Bob-Be-Que Shack

RJ's is the BBQ joint on Lamar, just North of Johnson Drive in Mission, KS. It's quickly becoming one of my regular BBQ joints. I think that's because they have a good pulled pork sandwich that's not too expensive, they're relatively near my stomping grounds, and they're never shockingly crowded at lunch time like some of the more trendy spots around town.

For lunch, they offer a little sandwich that is actually the right size for responsible diners. You can get any meat on it and seasoned fries for about $6. I like the pulled pork the best, but I've had the brisket, too, and it's pretty good. The fries are good, though I can't figure out their seasoning. I'd like to replicate it at home.

They also serve breakfast and apparently do pretty good business on weekend mornings. Next time I have a hankering for some biscuits and gravy or a chicken fried steak for breakfast, I'm heading over there.

I've had a few notable visits over there. Take a look at my original review from one of my earlier stops by there on August 1, 2008. When I returned most recently in October 2008, I noticed that they had rearranged the restaurant a little bit to facilitate the carry-out orders. I guess they're doing pretty good carry-out business for weekday lunches and probably for Chiefs games, and putting the carry-out window on the side of the restaurant keeps some of that foot traffic away from the diners. Good move.

They'll also deliver lunches or cater your groups if you're interested in that kind of thing.
